About Our Crime Data
Every statistic on this site comes directly from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, the nation's most comprehensive source of crime data. Unlike crowd-sourced platforms, our data is verified by law enforcement agencies across the country.
We cover violent crime (murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault) and property crime (burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson) for thousands of cities nationwide.
All crime rates are expressed per 100,000 residents, ensuring fair comparison regardless of city size. Our Safety Score system rates each city on a 1-to-100 percentile scale, where a score of N means the city has less crime than about N% of all US cities we track. A score of 50 is the median (a typical US city), while scores approaching 100 represent the safest communities in the country.
Each city page includes a complete crime breakdown by type, multi-year trend charts, comparisons with similar cities, and safety score context. Data is updated annually as new FBI UCR reports become available, and our ingestion pipeline recomputes all rankings and scores with each update.

Where does the crime data come from?
All data comes from the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, which collects statistics from law enforcement agencies across the United States. This is the same dataset used by government agencies, academic researchers, and news organizations. We use the most recent available data year and include cities with populations of 10,000 or more.
What is a Safety Score?
Our Safety Score rates each city on a 1 to 100 percentile scale. A score of N means the city has less crime than about N% of all US cities we track, so a score of 50 is the median (a typical US city), scores approaching 100 are the safest, and scores near 1 have the highest crime. It combines both violent and property crime into a single, easy-to-understand number and is recalculated for each data year.
How often is the data updated?
The FBI releases new UCR data annually, typically with a 1-2 year lag. When new data becomes available, we re-ingest the entire dataset, recompute all per-capita rates, safety scores, and rankings, and update every city and state page on the site. The current dataset reflects the latest FBI crime statistics.
